I mean, Wow! Verified Purchase. I had never intended to play this game. At best, my feelings towards first person shooters are Mostly I hate them outright.

Seeing it on the shelves as I looked for games, I thought it would probably have some decent eye-candy, but no real substance beyond that, so I passed. Serious mistake on my part. A couple of months later I bought a new graphics card for my computer, and decided I needed a new game that I could test it out on – of course, a first person shooter was the logical way to go, as they tend to make the most use out of high end graphics cards.

I picked up Far Cry based on all the positive reviews I\’ve seen, popped it in, and was absolutely floored by how insanely good this game is! The graphics in Far Cry are absolutely top-notch. I really haven\’t seen any game top it, even in the newest releases. Foilage and trees, water and rocks, leaves and grass, all rendered in absolutely stunning detail.

It\’s like actually being on a tropical island. Immersion in this game is near total. Sounds are excellent, and the voice work isn\’t bad either.

Extreme attention was paid to little details to make things appear more real and seemless. The AI is actually intelligent, as the enemy will actually shout commands to each other \”He\’s over there! The only graphical features which weren\’t as good were the Tri-Gens, the monstrous ape creatures that the storyline is centered around. While they look OK, they seem completely out of place, as though they just don\’t belong alongside all the other objects in the game.

When compared to the environments they are running around in or the human models, the Tri-Gens are sub-par, and unfortunately detract from the immersion, which leads me to my only other complaint about this game.

The story gets pretty weak pretty fast. It starts out strong – all mystery and intruige, but then once the curtain is pulled and you realize what\’s going on, it\’s kind of a let down after so much build up.

But hey, if story was the only consideration, first person shooters would never be bought, so don\’t worry, you\’re not missing out on much here.

Those issues aside, this game is near perfect. Cruising around in a speed boat while shooting missiles at people has got to be one of the most gratifying experiences ever. There\’s also quite a thrill to sneaking through some trees, hiding behind a wall of shrubs while you take aim and decimate the ranks of hired mercenaries blocking you from your destination. Early on the game the main character picks up a pair of binoculars that has one nifty little extra feature – it amplifys sound in whatever direction you are facing.

So even if you can\’t necesarilly see through a particular area, you will get audio clues to help you figure out what\’s around the bend.

Hearing all the mercenaries on the islands banter between themselves, especially about things you have just done, is a really nice touch. There is also a good deal of replayability in Far Cry. Just about every encounter in the game can be played out differently. In general it pays to be stealthy, sneaking around and scouting areas to see where all the enemies are before moving in, killing enemies quietely, one by one, until someone else finally notices and you have to then fight defensively, working towards your goal.

However, there is much fun to be had by doing the exact opposite – go find a jeep somewhere with a machine gun or rocket launcher attached to the top and force your way past the opposition, guns blazing, tires squeeling, health meter rapidly dropping. Quit your job, stop going to social functions, leave your significant other, cease spending time paying attention to completely un-important details like bathing daily and personal hygiene, and spend the next six weeks doing nothing but skulking around an island chain finding new ways to blow stuff up.

This is an experience you don\’t want to miss.
