Ann Jillian , who was then a teenager, was also added to the cast as Millie Ballard, Steve Baxter\’s receptionist. Jillian later went on to star in her own series, It\’s a Living , in the s, as well as several television films. Exteriors were shot at the Columbia Ranch in Burbank. This movie ranch facade used as the Baxters\’ house had previously been seen in several Three Stooges films, and was used as the home for the Lawrences on the sitcom Gidget.

From the driveway, the house next door to the right is recognizable as that of Darrin and Samantha Stephens from Bewitched. The episode \”What\’ll We Watch Tonight\”, in which Hazel purchases a color TV, is the only first-season episode shot in color and appears to promote color television sets. NBC, which aired the series, was owned by RCA , the largest seller of color television sets, during the period when most viewers still had black-and-white TVs. Two months after the announcement, the show\’s producers announced that a black production executive had joined the show.

While the weekly show began with an instrumental theme song composed by the team of Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen , the closing credits during the first eight shows of the inaugural season played the song with lyrics sung by The Modernaires.

There were different arrangements of the theme song as the series progressed, including a later version by Howard Greenfield and Helen Miller. As a result, Ford vehicles, including the Mustang when it was introduced in , were often prominently featured on the series, even as a part of the storyline an example of product placement.

During season four, Lever Brothers co-sponsored Hazel. The show\’s first season placed fourth in the — Nielsen\’s ratings. Shirley Booth received two Emmy Awards and for Hazel , and garnered a nomination for her third season At the end of the — season, the ratings had slipped from 15 the previous year to By the time NBC canceled the series in the spring of , Hazel had fallen out of the top 30 programs. Sign in to vote. It\’s cool to be an older woman ivan 13 October The wonderful thing about this unusually good-natured domestic sitcom is that an older woman is the star.

I remember enjoying it immensely. Acting, plots, camera are all respectful of the viewer: no slapstick, no mockery or denigration. This is very rare in comedy, where cruelty is usually a major component.

When will they show this gem again? The Real Burke\’s Law aimless 28 February It was an extremely popular baby boomer show although it is now in the \”dead man walking\” category as none of the original four principal actors are still alive. They had a young son Harold Bobby Buntrock. George is a klutz around the house and most of the conflict revolves around his frustration when he is routinely shown-up by the much more competent Hazel.

Dorothy Baxter ranked 1 on the list of most erotic \’s television wives, with the tightest skirts, highest heels, and a fantasy level bust to waist ratio. Hazel pretty much runs the family, sorting out the Baxter\’s weekly problems and keeping the frustrated blustering George in line. Living with Hazel was a lot worse than living with Amos McCoy because she was rarely if ever wrong or repentant as she incessantly meddled in everyone\’s life.

In its last season the producers shake things up and ship George and Dorothy off to Saudi Arabia. Hazel and Harold move in with George\’s younger brother Steve Ray Fulmer , his wife Barbara Lynn Borden , and his daughter Susie Julia Benjamin ; \’s television was notorious for finding creative ways to back fill with younger children when the original ones grew too old to appeal to their intended demographic.

Steve, Barbara, and Susie constitute the most physically attractive family in television history, but Hazel soon took over their household as well; although Steve and Barbara do stand up to her better than their predecessors. The popular theory at the time was than George and Dorothy just made up the Saudi story so they could escape Hazel\’s domination and live out their lives somewhere else with some degree of independence.

Then again, what do I know? I\’m only a child. I have loved \”Hazel\” since I was a little kid and saw it on the network. When the DVD came out last year I did not hesitate to buy it. Re-viewing the series confirms why Shirley Booth won two Emmy awards playing this role. She makes the character Hazel Burke into a lovely, believable woman. The writing and direction of the show was pretty good and holds up well over the years. One reviewer commented on the change in the set decoration in the episode \”Dorothy\’s Birthday.

Also, another reviewer noticed that while the film quality on this DVD was generally excellent, some of the end credit sequences were \”a bit ragged\” as though taken from 16mm sources. This could possibly be because the original end credits were superimposed over a series of Ford cars driving down a highway. Ford sponsored the series, and I remember seeing the end credits in this way.

In any case, I loved and continue to love this series and will continue to enjoy it on my DVD set. It\’s had a lot of national exposure on Antenna TV and people are once again appreciating this fine series. One of the best comedy series ever!! SkippyDevereaux 23 December I love this show!! I have a book that has the floorplan to this house in it.

Wish I had a house like that!! It is nice to watch this show and not have to worry about back-talking kids or cussing or anything that is prevalent in today\’s so-called comedies. Just wish that someone would show reruns of this wonderful show again. Heaven knows there are enough channels out there to afford it the airtime.

It was a very good sitcom, thanks to the outstanding performance of Shirley Booth as the title character. It was her breakout TV role that won her a couple of Emmys. Sadly, Buntrock was killed in a car accident at the age of Not only was Hazel an outstanding maid, she was also a really good bowler. I remember the episode where she competed in a bowling tournament. Those two have rarely been heard from in years. Coming from Screen Gems, who had a hit with another sitcom based on the comic strip Dennis the Menace, Hazel ran for five years and ended its run, not because of declining ratings but because Booth was tiring of the role.

The show was in reruns for years and later disappeared. But fear not, thanks to the new digital broadcast network Antenna TV, viewers can finally see this lost gem of the 60s.

As the theme song stated early in the run \”Who\’s the gal that\’s everybody\’s pal? It\’s Hazel. For the five seasons that it was on the air,Oscar-winning actress Shirley Booth played an independent, opinionated, extremely talkative,in control housekeeper on \”Hazel\”,but on the other end there was never a more lovable and respectable maid who became television\’s favorite.

Russell for Screen Gems took some of the harshness out of the cartoon character and replaced it with the warmth and wholesome family values that made \”Hazel\” a huge television hit for the early\’s. The show aired during the first four seasons on NBC\’s Thursday night Prime-Time lineup from September 28, until March 25, for episodes with the first season episodes in black and white producing 35 episodes with the exception of \”What\’ll We Watch Tonight\”,from Season 1,Episode 6 that was the only episode in its first season in color airing from September 28, until June 7, The fifth and final season saw the series moved from NBC to CBS for 29 color episodes airing from September 13, until the final episode of the series on April 11, Verified Purchase.

The Family Channel had it on in the s briefly and they only showed it twice a week AND only ran the second season over and over. So, Season 5 has always been my Holy Grail. Hazel chiding Mr. B about his weight and his exasperation at her antics was getting stale in Season 4.

Ray Fulmer had just the right amount of bland handsomeness and guy-next-door qualities to make him perfect for the role of a suburban s family man and Lynn Borden is like a cross between Laura Petrie and Samantha Stephens.

The season starts off with almost every episode mentioning the missing parents in passing. It\’s painful enough that two of the three big stars on the show are gone, and the replacements seem wooden a lot of times, but that\’s mostly because I wasn\’t used to them much. However, once the season got some steam behind it, I didn\’t find them all that much worse.

Because while the battles were going on between the three main stars in previous seasons, this season took a much more cooperative feel to everybody involved. And while it wasn\’t a good sitcom in the final season compared to other sitcoms, somehow it worked quite well within the Hazel universe, almost a breath of fresh air. I never would have believed it, and I always hated this season previously, because I was all so turned off against the new Baxters and the old crew given the air, so naturally I just saw it in clips and didn\’t really invest in it like buying it on dvd can do.

If you hated it like me, and therefore hardly watched it, I think you\’ll be surprised that it\’s quite a bit better than you always thought.

I would put it as a pretty close match to the other seasons for just the enjoyment aspect. It\’s different from before, but compared to all the years of skullduggery on previous years, it is quite nice. It does have the convenience of color too. Finally, I would imagine that the early years were more true to the Hazel comic strip, so from that aspect this may seem almost an abomination, but the change in tone does show you what it could be like without all the fussing going on, sans the early Baxters.

After enjoying the first four seasons of \’Hazel\’ starring the original \’Baxters\’ Don Defore and Whitney Blake alongside Shirley Booth, I was prepared to be disappointed by the revamped lineup of the sitcom\’s final season.

Instead, I found the change to be a refreshing one which gave the show an inherently lighter tone. Not that the previous seasons were dark or anything–but the component of George\’s confrontational tone with Hazel had gradually become more of a focal point, which I think took something away from the feel-good quality for which \’Hazel\’ is most prevalently known.

With the arrival of Lynn Borden and Ray Fulmer as the new \’Baxter\’ family for which Shirley Booth plays the maid, there is a less volatile feel–not to mention a slightly more believable component to the character portrayals. No doubt about it, Defore and Blake were both fine actors.

But Borden and Fulmer seemed to portray more everyday personality traits which lent themselves well to the fun, often zany, story lines. There are 29 episodes in total. Some focus on Hazel\’s tendency to stir up trouble inadvertently; others zoom in on various aspects of Steve Baxter\’s work as a real estate agent; and one even places the spotlight on Harold the late Bobby Buntrock, who remained from the original cast and his friends as they start a kids\’ rock band of sorts.

There are other familiar faces from earlier seasons of \”Hazel\” here, too: Cathy Lewis playing George\’s sister, Deirdre and Maudie Prickett as Hazel\’s fellow maid and friend, Rosie. Through it all, Shirley Booth maintains her remarkably believable acting style which truly makes you forget she\’s acting.

I read an interview with Ray Fulmer from not long after the series was canceled stating that he found the show\’s writing to be very shoddy, but Booth\’s abilities to be nothing short of miraculous.

I do agree that some of the episodes suffer from loopholes in the plots and on occasion, abrupt endings. But between the chemistry of the actors, the interesting guest players, Booth\’s one-of-a-kind talent, and even the background music in the shows, those shortcomings are easy to overlook.
